One of the most common questions we receive from candidates is:
"Why haven't I received any updates about the position?"
You spoke with a recruiter, they introduced you to a job opportunity, submitted your resume to the company, and then... you never hear back.
It's understandable to feel frustrated. Job searching can be stressful, and waiting without any communication can make the process even more difficult. While every situation is different, we'd like to share what often happens behind the scenes.
Sometimes Recruiters Get Busy
Recruiters often manage dozens of open positions and communicate with hundreds of candidates at the same time. Occasionally, we get caught up with interviews, client meetings, or urgent hiring needs and may forget to send an update. We always strive to keep candidates informed, but sometimes things slip through the cracks.
If you haven't heard from your recruiter in a week or two, don't hesitate to send a friendly follow-up. We genuinely appreciate the reminder.
Often, We're Waiting on the Company
What many candidates don't realize is that recruiters don't always receive timely updates from the hiring company.
After we submit your resume, we regularly follow up with the employer to ask questions such as:
- Have you reviewed the resume?
- Are you interested in interviewing the candidate?
- Have you made a decision?
Unfortunately, some companies don't respond right away and sometimes they don't respond at all. Even after multiple follow-ups, we may not receive any feedback or a final decision.
It's also important to remember that not every company is hiring immediately. Some employers prefer to collect resumes over several weeks so they can compare multiple candidates before deciding who to interview. During that time, they may not provide recruiters with any updates.
Why Don't Recruiters Just Say You Didn't Get the Job?
This is a question we hear often.
The truth is, unless the company officially tells us they are no longer considering your application, we don't want to make assumptions.
There have been many situations where a company stayed silent for weeks, only to come back later and request an interview. If we tell a candidate they weren't selected without official confirmation, we could unintentionally cause them to miss out on an opportunity.
That's why we may wait until we receive an official update before giving you a final answer.
Following Up Can Actually Help
If you're still interested in a position, reaching out to your recruiter is always a good idea.
A simple message asking for an update lets us know you're still enthusiastic about the opportunity. It also gives us another reason to follow up with the hiring manager and remind them that you're eager to move forward.
What You Can Do
Here are a few tips to help keep the process moving:
- Follow up with your recruiter about one week after your resume has been submitted if you haven't heard anything.
- Let your recruiter know you're still interested in the position.
- Keep your recruiter informed if your job search status changes, such as receiving another offer or accepting a new position.
- Continue applying for other opportunities while you wait. It's always best to keep your options open.

Recruiters want to help candidates find the right opportunity. We don't benefit from keeping candidates waiting, and we're just as excited as you are when an interview or job offer comes through.
If you haven't heard from us, it doesn't necessarily mean you've been rejected. Many times, we're waiting for the same update that you are. Some companies move quickly, while others take several weeks to review applicants and make hiring decisions.
So don't be afraid to reach out. A quick follow-up helps us know you're still interested and gives us another opportunity to check in with the employer. Even if the news isn't what you were hoping for, we may have other positions that are a great fit for your background.
