Pointers for Job Searching During COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted many aspects of our everyday lives, including job searching. We have seen a drop in the number of available positions, which has had a major impact on candidates looking for jobs. In these trying times many of our candidates have reached out to us regarding job searching and how this will affect their future careers. Some of the questions we received were “What kind of companies are hiring now and is there any hiring? Are companies still conducting interviews and if they are, how are they conducting them? Is there any advice you can provide for my job search?” These are all very valid questions and we want to help answer some of them today.

CURRENT HIRING STATUS

  • Are there companies hiring?
    • The short answer to this question is “Yes”. Some companies are currently hiring, however the number of positions has drastically decreased. Also, job training has become difficult due to work from home measures, therefore many companies have put their open positions on hold.
  • What companies are hiring?
    • Mainly companies considered essential businesses, for instance:
      • Logistics and freight forwarding
      • Food and other essential goods distributors
      • Essential product manufacturers

INTERVIEW INFORMATION

  • How are companies conducting interviews?
    • Many companies are no longer conducting on-site interviews and switched to conducting interviews by phone or virtually.
  • How to prepare for interviews?
    • Prepare for the interviews as if they were on-site interviews
      • Research the company and the position
      • Dress appropriately
    • Be cautious of the background in your video and noise distractions
    • Be prepared at least 15-20 minutes before interview
      • Ensure proper connection and log onto or join the apps/sites where the interview will take place
      • Test connection, audio, video beforehand
      • Inform of any connection issues before or during the interview to the company

STAYING PRODUCTIVE

  • What can candidates do now?
    • Post/Submit your resume for positions you are interested in. There are not as many positions available, but some companies are still hiring, so be proactive and keep applying as you normally would.
    • Refine resumes. Review and refine your resume, ensuring all information is up to date and accurate.
    • Talk to recruiters. Recruiters are experts when it comes to what is happening in the current job market, so reach out to them for advice and to broaden your job search.
    • Do research. Research companies and positions that you normally would not or try to find companies that interest you. There is so much information you can learn from a company website and you may find something that you never thought you would be interested in.
